Care & Cleaning Tips

MDF needs a different approach to Acrylic or Perspex, so it's worth reading this bit properly.

  • Dust it with a dry cloth; no need for anything wet
  • Keep it away from standing water or damp conditions; it'll swell if it gets properly wet
  • If you want to clean marks off, use a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away
  • Paint or seal it if it's going somewhere with any moisture at all

Treat it like wood, not plastic, and it'll last well.

Is MDF waterproof?

No. Standard MDF can swell or warp when exposed to water or prolonged damp conditions and should be used only in a suitable dry environment.

Can I paint or decorate it?

Yes. MDF accepts many paints, primers and decorative finishes. Prepare and prime the surface according to the finish manufacturer's instructions.

Can I cut it down myself at home?

It can be cut using suitable woodworking tools and appropriate dust controls. For an accurate finished size, send the dimensions through the Made to Measure form.

Is it strong enough for shelving?

It may suit lightly loaded, short shelving spans with adequate support. Heavier loads or wider spans require suitable structural support and may need a different material or thickness.
